5 Things You Should Know About Before Travelling with Your Mom

First of all let me start by saying my mom is THE BEST! Now I know I am bias, but she truly is. We have done a few holidays together before and even when I am so far away from home, we call each other a few times a week, so the basis for a holiday like this was already there. I know some people don’t have this close of a relationship with their moms, but even if, or maybe because of that, try out some of these things and see what happens, it might make miracles happen ;)
I truly had the best time with her and can’t stress enough how important it is to spend quality time with your family and loved ones!

Backpacking with Mom for a few weeks - amazing adventure!
#1 Think of it as a holiday, not just two or three weeks travelling - everyone who has been travelling for a longer time will know what I mean. Spending a two or three week holiday somewhere is different than travelling full time for a few months. You do things differently, spend less money, find all the cheap eats and places to go, and probably do the less touristy things. Anyways for your mom (or anyone else coming to visit you while you are on this awesome trip) it is just that - a HOLIDAY and a break from the chaos, stress, and hard work of a full time job. Acknowledge that and spend time resting, enjoying each others company, and the good weather and beaches rather than packing all day full with 100 things to do and see.

#2 Be prepared to pay more - if your mom is like mine, then putting her in a ten bed dorm with stuffy air, no window, only one fan for all, and a shared bathroom in the hallway, probably won’t cut it and will make the holiday and experience less enjoyable for both of you (who wants a cranky mom for three weeks?!). Be prepared to spend a bit of extra money for a clean and nice double room, attached (hot) shower in a bit of a nicer Guesthouse or Hotel.

#3 Book things in advance - book things like your next accommodation in advance, your mom will thank you for it. It saves the hassle of looking around by foot in a place that you have not been before, carrying your heavy bags, and sweating from all the heat and humidity. My personal favourite for this is booking.com - it has some of the best deals and low prices, plus so many amazing places for every budget to choose from! From dorm rooms in hostels, to simple guesthouses, to expensive hotels or villas, booking.com has it all!

#4 Take things a bit slower - now I am in my mid 20’s, my mom is in her mid 50’s...! (Go you mom for doing a trip like this!) That means to sometimes take things a bit slower. Take more time in one place, sit and rest if the dead heat of the afternoon sun is too much, take a taxi (blue bird taxis are the way to go and are a lot cheaper than anything else in Bali) if walking is too far, and allow some time for a cold drink or a chat - soon enough you will be on your own again and can go the tempo you want to and are used to.

#5 And lastly (but the most important of it all) ENJOY IT!! - how amazing is it that your mom is coming all that way to spend a few weeks with YOU!? Enjoy every single minute and cherish every moment with her - she is after all your mom and one of the most important people in the world! ❤️

Thanks Kay!! Hahaha I understand that one too! Can be pretty expensive, but maybe your mom will pay for one or the other thing, like accommodation (she would need it either way, travelling alone or with you hahha) which makes it a bit cheaper again. Or just take her for a weekend away!

My mum is one of my favourite travelling companions, and since my sister moved to Finland and I moved to London she has became so much braver with solo travel so I completely agree it's such a mutually beneficial thing - I push her out her comfort zone a little, but she provides all the comforts of home :)

Aw this is so lovely! My partner and I took my parents on a 3-week tour of West Australia and it was the first time they'd taken a holiday that didn't involve simply laying on a beach for 2 weeks. My dad loved it so much he started referring to himself as a nomad because he'd slept in 7 different beds 😂 These tips are super useful though, especially about taking it slower!

It's great that you travel with your mom. I love when she's visiting me in my city and spend time with her and I always wanted to take her to NYC. Need to speed up my business so I can afford ;-)

Thanks Nicola!! It’s not all about the money though, my mom was quite happy to pay for most things, especially accommodation, since she would have needed that either way!
Love that you both spend time together and hope you get to take her to NYC soon!! :)

This was so sweet. And definitely accurate. Unfortunately, my mom is a bitttt of a brat, so traveling with her is kind of a nightmare 😬

It's a good idea to travel with our mom. i haven't tried rather than traveling with your partner. This is something like new to me and this made me realized we need to give chance to our parents spending travel moments.
